How to become a Radiologist

The field of radiology is growing rapidly and there is extensive training required to enter the profession and succeed as a radiologist. There are prerequisites in undergraduate training and four years of medical school required along with post-graduate training requiring five years to complete. Various rotations are usually completed during the first year of postgraduate studies although it can have a preliminary internship in either medicine or surgery. This preliminary year is followed by a diagnostic radiology residency requiring four years for completion.

The four year residency consists of an exam for the medical physics board which will entail both science and technology involved in the various diagnostic tests utilized in the field of radiology. There must be a basic knowledge of radiobiology which studies the radiations affects on the body's tissue. There are opportunities for radiology training available at colleges, universities and hospitals. There are certificates, associates and bachelor's degrees for radiology.

What does a Radiologist do?

While radiology was once thought of as simply taking and interpreting X-rays the field has become far more advanced; today the Radiologist uses medial imaging technology to assist them in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses.

Now the radiologist will utilize ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) to get a diagnosis of illnesses and the best method for treating them. Imaging technology is used to guide the least evasive medical procedures possible in Interventional radiology. Radiologist will also keep patient records up to date and maintain the equipment utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Radiologists are also responsible for maintaining and overseeing the purchase of the equipment utilized in the treatment of patience and evaluating the purchase of additional equipment. With further training and education radiologist can enter into a management position where the job description involves overseeing the activities of the staff and making work schedules to ensure that operations run smoothly.

What skills or qualities do I need to become a Radiologist?

The field of radiology is making advances on a consistent basis requiring radiologist to be flexible and constantly continue their education in order to be up to date on the latest medical advances in the field. It is vital for a radiologist to possess adequate communication skills so they can effectively work with a team to solve the problems presented to them on a daily basis. They must also be motivated enough to continue educating themselves as to the latest advances and newest developments in the field of radiology.
