How to become a Cardiovascular Technician

Cardiovascular technicians and technologists can be trained in a number of different ways. Some cardiovascular technicians and technologists receive on the job training, but most receive training in a vocational school or a community college. Two to four year programs are common, with two year programs at a community or junior college being the way that most cardiovascular technicians and technologists are trained. Four year programs are becoming much more popular, however. First the core classes are taken and then the aspiring technician or technologist receives specialized instruction in his or her area.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHP) accredits education programs for cardiovascular technicians and technologists. After a program is completed, the cardiovascular technician or technologist can receive additional on the job training.

What does a Cardiovascular Technician do?

Cardiovascular Technicians and technologists assist cardiologists with patients. They may schedule appointments, perform procedures such as ultrasounds or cardiovascular procedures, maintain files, and explain different cardiovascular tests to patients. There are three areas of specialty for cardiovascular technicians and technologists:

Vascular technology involves circulatory disorders, and cardiovascular technicians who work in vascular technology are known as vascular technologists. These technologists take the medical history from patients, take the patient's pulse, and to help with different vascular tests.

Invasive cardiology is another area in which cardiovascular technicians work, referred to as cardiology technologists. Cardiovascular technicians working in invasive cardiology help cardiologists with cardiac catheters, which can be used for diagnosis and treatment of many cardiac problems. They may also assist with procedures such as open heart surgery.

Non-invasive cardiology is the final area in which a cardiovascular technician or technologist may work. Cardiovascular technologists who work in this area assist with tests that are non-invasive, such as sonograms and ultrasounds.

What skills or qualities do I need to become a Cardiovascular Technician?

Cardiovascular technicians and technologists need a variety of skills and qualities to be good at their job. They must be good with various diagnostic tools and gadgets, as there are many different tools used in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular problems and illnesses. In addition, cardiovascular technicians should be good with people, since most of their work will be directly with patients, and they may work with patients who are distressed or have just received bad news.. A cardiovascular technician will usually need to communicate well with both the physician and the patients.
